860-880 Lake Shore Drive Buildings

These buildings are unique among skyscrapers for their architect is better known than their client. Mies Van der Rohe designed these apartments with his International Style. The issue of skyscraper aesthetic troubled many in their early development. Some emulated their buildings off of a column and the campanile bell tower until the height grew too tall for detailed horizontal pieces, at which point there was no precedent in design. The international Style fits well with the large mass of skyscrapers.
