New York felt much of the political heat when it came to the competition for the tallest skyscraper. Within the city skyscrapers were built at speed, architects and their patrons raced to build the next tallest building. In the course of a four year period (1928-1931), three buildings, taller than ever before were built. The had changed drastically since the turn of the century, and has continued to do so with the construction of the One World Trade Center recently marking the skyline.
