Home Insurance Building
Before skyscrapers, tall buildings were mostly masonry. Tall buildings could be constructed out of the material but the thickness of the walls needed to support it stunted the usable space. The Home Insurance Building, built in 1883 and was the first to have steel in its structure, characterizing it as a skyscraper. This claim is often disputed for the steel only stretches across the two street side walls of the building.
